Who are we? What is our mission?A man is standing on the corner of the street in the middle of rush hour traffic. He wanders back and forth to adjacent crosswalks as the lights flash from red to green, always pausing at the head of a line of idling vehicles. His clothes are torn and stained, and don't entirely fit him. His face is scruffy and somewhat unkempt. His eyes look heavy, in fact too heavy sometimes to even lift. In his hands he holds a cardboard sign stained by the weather that reads, "Anything helps, God bless". Do you know this man? Have you seen him before?
No matter where you live, you have likely encountered someone like this. Homelessness is rampant in every part of our country, and in every part of our country, the homeless exist as a forgotten community. They live in our midst, but it is so easy to overlook their suffering and even their humanity, and in time, they can learn to forget it too. At Urban Hearts, we want to encounter the homeless in their need and accompany them in their suffering. We want to remind them that they are human, that they are loved, and that they matter. And we want you to join us in our mission. |
